Using Questions To Overcome Stress, comfort Or Emotional Eating.
(Can be used to change habits and behaviors too)
Questions are powerful.
Your brain is designed to answer the questions you ask it.
So it’s crucial to ask the right questions.
For example if you say things like ‘why does this always happen to me’ or ‘why am I such a failure?’ your brain will look for an answer to that question
But if you ask things like ‘what can I learn from this?’ Or how can I get better because of this?’
Your brain will try and give you an answer to those questions instead.
So, you can see how important it is to ask the right ones.
And how POWERFUL it can be if you ask the right questions when trying to solve a problem.
They help you reframe how you’re looking at something.
Which is exactly what we want to do when trying to deal with stress/emotional eating or overcoming bad habits.
Right let’s get stuck into this bad boy.
First up we’re going to use questions to create some awareness.
Awareness helps create understanding which in turn can help give us some power back over the situation.
☑️ What usually triggers me to do this?
☑️ Why do I think I do that?
☑️ Where did I learn this?
☑️ What is it that I’m getting from the food/habit?
☑️ How do I think it’s gonna make me feel?
☑️ How does it actually make me feel?
Next up we’re gonna link some pain to this bad boy.
If we want to stop a behavior we want to associate a lot of pain to it.
Because right now the reason you keep going it is that on some level it’s giving you more pleasure than pain.
☑️ What has this behavior already cost me?
☑️ What will it cost me if I don’t change it?
☑️ How do I usually feel after I do it?
☑️ What thoughts or feelings do I have about myself because of it?
☑️ What are the consequences of not changing it?
Now we want to try and associate pleasure, benefits, and rewards to changing it.
☑️ Why is changing this important to me?
☑️ For each answer to the above, follow up with this…..Why is that important to me?
☑️ what are the benefits to changing this?
☑️ If I do change this how will it make me feel about myself?
☑️ What else could be positively affected by changing this?
Now to finish we’re gonna want to make a plan to change it.
☑️ What else could I do that could give me what I’m looking for from the food/habit?
Write out a list of actions and behaviors that you can do instead of turning to food or the bad habit for stress or comfort.
☑️ What could I do instead when I’m triggered?
☑️ How can I remind myself of how doing it is REALLY going to make me feel?
☑️ How can I remind myself of what it’s gonna cost me?
☑️ What’s my plan for that?
This is where you’re gonna do some if/then planning. Okay.
So if X happens then I’ll do Y
For example.
If I’m stressed out after a hard day in work and I want to eat a pack of biscuits.
Then I’m going to run a nice hot bath a light some candles instead.
Now this bit is the really important part…,
So listen up.
This is where you actually follow through and stick to what you said you were gonna do.
The plan is useless unless you actually use it.
This may seem like a lot of work to some people.
And that’s okay.
Maybe you’d be better off getting comfortable with the fact that you’re actually happy with the way things are right now.
For the other people.
Who want this to change…..
If you’re willing to invest 30-60 minutes of your valuable time… ?
This could completely change the game for you.
Remember this….
Nothing changes if nothing changes….!
(Profound I know)
