In one word:
No
Post over
Goodbye
Haha
Ok not really,
I’m going to try my best to explain this in normal language and make it easy to understand unlike some of those other trainers and ‘fit pro’s’ who always try use the convoluted technical language which just confuses people,
Simply just to try and make themselves sound important and look good In front of other trainers.
Or to sell you shit you don’t need.
But I’m not like that.
You see,
I’m special (that’s what my mum always told me anyway)
So you don’t have to worry.
I’m here to help you.
And I have a mission, and that mission is:
So strap yourself in darling,
Cause you are in for one hellova a ride.
You’re here because you want to know, will carbs make me fat ?
And in order for me to explain this
I first need to tell you about a very misunderstood little hormone called insulin (poor fella)
You see,
It is this relationship between insulin and carbohydrates that is at the root of this problem and all the misleading information that has you confused and overwhelmed.
What is insulin?
1. It’s primary job is to lower blood sugar
When blood sugar is high, insulin is released from the pancreas to lower it.
2. It is also a storage hormone
It does this by shuttling nutrients into cells by telling them to open up and absorb them.
(Mainly muscle and fat cells)
When it does this blood sugar also lowers.
So insulin does have very important jobs in the body, it is not the devil.
But what increases blood sugar I hear you ask?
Good question
And this is where the relationship between carbs and insulin will come a bit clearer.
Things that increase blood sugar…..
Food and drink
Stress
Sleep
Food intolerance
All effect it
But
For the purposes of this article,
I’m solely focusing on food and drink, and in particular carbs.
Anytime you eat
Blood sugar will be increased,
But
Larger meals,
Meals higher in carbs,
meals with fast acting carbs,
All increase blood sugar faster than insulin can react.
(Most of the time, We don’t want this)
And it can also cause a host of problems and health issues if it keeps happening and happening to often.
And this is part of where the ‘carbs make me fat story came from’
The other part is this:
Insulin is a storage hormone and if it is activated too often from blood sugar being elevated too much.
Your muscle cells will stop responding to it.
(Remember insulin stores nutrients in your cells)
But your fat cells won’t stop responding.
They are greedy little fuckers and they’ll soak up anything you give them.
So if there is excess fatty acids and sugar in the blood our fat cells are always more than happy to give those guys a home.
but there’s more
(dum dum dum)
When insulin is activated it switches off other hormones and one of those hormones is a lovely guy called hormone sensitive lipase.
This lovely chap is responsible for getting fatty acids out of the fat cells so they can be burned off.
(We like this)
But when insulin is active
Hormone sensitive lipase can’t do that.
And this is another reason why insulin got its bad rap.
And because of carbs close relationship with insulin…..
Well, they are now guilty by association too
And become an easy scapegoat.
And This is how the story goes …
High carbs = high insulin = increased fat storage and decreased fat burning = more fat gain
Sounds plausible right?
And that’s what all those guys trying to sell you super low carbs diets want you to think.
But they forgot to mention one very important thing
(Sneaky bastards)
The law of thermodynamics and energy balance which sounds pretty fancy
But it is actually really simple.
Let me show you
If it takes X amount of calories to keep your weight the same and you eat less than X you will lose weight.
And
If it takes X amount of calories to maintain your weight and you eat more, you will gain weight.
So it doesn’t matter how many carbs you eat
Or how much insulin is in the blood
If you eat less than it takes to maintain your weight
You will drop weight
This can not be avoided.
But what about insulin being a fat storage hormone?
And carbs increase insulin, so if I eat carbs, I’ll store fat, right?
Insulin can store fat, yes
In fact every time we eat, we store some of the energy from that food as body fat.
The most important factor to remember is energy balance
Because if you are in a calorie deficit, which is when you eat less than it takes to maintain your current weight.
Your body will then need to burn it off again and more, once it has used up the energy from the food you eat.
This only becomes a real problem is you are overeating!!!
Overeating is what causes weight gain, not carbs.
Now don’t get me wrong, insulin and blood sugar constantly being elevated does have health consequences, some quite serious
(But that’s not what this is about)
You are here because you want to know
Will carbs make me fat ?
The answer
No
Overeating does
Some people handle carbs better than others for a number of reasons.
Some people’s insulin response works better than others does.
Some people may get slower or faster results depending on which side of this fence they sit on
Can occasionally lowering carbs be good?
Yes and no
It depends on the person,
But it is so crucial that we all find something that works for us.
That we can actually maintain.
And that we focus on the most important things, if we want to get the best results.
Your body might get faster fat loss results if you remove carbs,
But if you love carbs
How long are you going to last doing that?
Simply just removing carbs is not the answer, it is a very easy way however to put somebody in a calorie deficit so they lose weight and then everyone can just say it was carbs fault.
Then I could go into the whole psychology of prohibiting certain foods or food groups and what it does to our mental state
But that is a topic I could literally talk about for hours,
But I will say this
You’re not allowed have carbs ever again because they are bad !!!!
What do you think is going to happen there?
You feel miserable,
You think about them all day,
Feel guilty for thinking about them,
Which makes you think of them more,
Feel even guiltier,
And eventually it all gets too much and you have some carbs.
Which in your mind means…..
I’ve blown my diet
I’m a failure,
Nothing ever works,
Enter: extreme guilt and shame,
Go off the rails altogether,
I knew carbs make me fat!!!
Fuck my life!!
As I said above,
We have to find ways to make it work for us
But the plain and simple truth of it is that carbs do not make anybody fat unless they eat too many of them.
(And that includes eating carbs at night, that’s ok too)
Mind blown!!
This has been awesome,
But
I’m out
